{everyday inspiration}

Sometimes, inspiration comes to you in surprising ways. When you are tired, when you are doubtful, when you are frustrated, when you are just going through the motions and not "in it to win it"...inspiration can surprise you.

And energize you.  Renew your spirit.  Refresh your heart and soul.  Make you very glad. Illuminate the face of God in the most unexpected ways.

So, my inspiration post today is different than most.  Because sometimes, inspiration can come to you in surprising ways.

A friend of mine posted this story on her facebook page this weekend: She and her husband were in the grocery store.  They were buying breakfast items for a ministry they are involved in - feeding those in need the first Sunday morning of every month.  She and her husband were talking about whether or not they should take a step back from this ministry and let others step up to serve.

They were having doubts.

They stood in line to check out with their cart full of breakfast items for the next morning and the couple in front of them noticed and commented they must be planning a big breakfast.  My friend and her husband told the couple about the ministry work they do.  The couple was so moved by what they had shared they asked if they could pay for half of the groceries.  When it came time to pay, that couple instead paid for the entire cart of groceries.  $175 worth.  Just like that.

God answers sometimes in big ways.  And inspires us to keep going.  Because what we do DOES matter to Him and to others who really need us even if we aren't really feeling "in it to win it".

I have shared this story with several friends after I heard it and even as I type this, it still brings tears to my eyes. God is SO real.  And so good.  And loves us so much. Helping others is so inspiring to me.  Giving is such in incredible gift. Know what I mean? Giving is such a blessing for the giver.  And receiver. And so this story has renewed and reenergized my soul this morning.

No cute photos.  No giveaways.  Just words.  God is real. What an inspiration.

Are you a fan of Fave Crafts?  Let me introduce you to your next time suck...oh, it is awesome.

Packed with loads, and loads, and loads, and loads of ideas from sewing to knitting and everything you can imagine.  AND they have a great radio show, Fave Crafts Radio with Pat Sloan.

Guess who the next guest is going to be?

Me.

Excuse me while I go settle my nerves.  Breathe in.  Breathe out.  I'll be Pat's first guest next Wednesday, October 5th at 3pm EST.  You can tune in right HERE or you can download a free podcast of it from iTunes right after the show.

So what should I wear??  Thinking I should get my nails done too...just kidding!  I'm totally going to be in yoga pants and t-shirt I'm sure!

I hope you'll tune in.

I hope I don't screw up too badly.

Or say something I shouldn't.  It's LIVE.

Did I mention its a LIVE show?  Yeah, LIVE.  And I don't know if there is a delay or not so hopefully I don't say something that the FCC would ban.  I mean, I don't think it will be like a version of SEWERS GONE WILD or anything.  Um, right?  {insert uncomfortable nervous giggle}

Yes, a wee bit on the nervous side.

See you on the radio!

{thrifting finds and apple butter day}

I have said this before but it goes to the heart of what I love...I love junk.

I love trash picking.  Garage sales.  Thrifting.  Love.  Love like a good cup of coffee.  Love.

Last Sunday after church, my friend Lydia and I went thrifting.  We were on the hunt for supplies for a show we decided we would do together. Thinking about Christmas and earning some extra dollars for the kids... we signed up to have a booth at the Apple Butter Day in Groveport, OH.

So we packed up the kids and spent a nice afternoon combing every square inch searching for treasures. We found all kinds of things we needed for some of the crafts we have in mind.

But these peep toes shoes.  They were calling my name.  They were like new, all shiny and under $3.  I couldn't resist. And clearly, neither can Sprout.  Because she promptly "borrowed" them and played "Momma" the rest of the day.  It's pretty cute.  She grabs her play computer, phone and a pad of paper and a pen..."I'm working, like Momma!" because when I work from home, that's what we do.  We sit down together at the table with our "computers" and our paper and she takes orders and I fill them.  She should be ready to take over as CEO by the time she's 10 I'm certain of it.

Miss Lydia and I have lots of fun plans in store and many sewing dates ahead as we prep for next week Saturday.  Pretty scarves and fun reclaimed items, wristlets and pretties for your hair and more!   If you're so inclined, come and see us!  We will be in the big tent right smack in the middle of it all, next to the log cabin.  Come and say hi!

Thanks to everyone who joined in for the first linky party!

{monday mornings inspiration}

What inspires you?  To create and craft and sew.  Each week, I'd love for you link up on Monday Morning for some inspiration.  I am not one of those that hates Mondays.  I love Mondays.  I'm ready to get my work done for the week and anxious to jump in.  What a great way to start the week, sharing what each of us finds inspiration in and in turn, inspiring each other.

This week, I was inspired by FAMILY. My sewing included making a stash of these for my niece. (well, something like these - I changed up the pattern a bit from this first one)

She was married on Saturday and I made a stack of these for her bridesmaids.  They were a hit with the girls. At the reception, they had a dance for all of the married couples.  They would call out, "If you've been married 4 hours and 10 minutes or less, leave the floor."  Or 10 years or less, etc.  Until they had one couple remaining who had been married the longest.  The one couple still on the dance floor...my parents.

My parents have been married for 54 years.  They are in their late 70's and they were dancing it up.  (My parents still work out at the gym 2 days a week!)  They asked my Mom first what advice she had for a lasting marriage.  She said, "Communication and Cooperation".  Then they asked my Dad.  He said, "She communicates, I cooperate".  Good answer Dad!  Additionally, I have video of my Dad from that evening dancing with all of my nieces, my nephews girlfriend and all the "young college kids" hooping and hollering my Dad's name and cheering him on.  He seriously has still got the moves!   He and my Mom both really inspire me.

When I think about most often why I sew, it does always come back to one theme, family.  And friends. Which is why over the weekend, I shared THIS Mystery Sew Along with my friends.  Did you play along?  If you didn't, you can still go back and follow the tutorial.  I'd love to see all of your pumpkins!  It would be really cute to make these in different sizes and stack them all around your house this season.  I love the pumpkins because you display these clear through Thanksgiving!

So it's your turn to share.  Share what inspires you.  Share your sew along pumpkins.  Share your crafty goodies! You can link back here using this button   - here's the code: <a href=”http://twopeasinapoddesigns.com/2011/09/monday-mornings-inspiration-2/”><img src=”http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr225/2peasinapoddesigns/inspiration-button.jpg/”></a>

I'm sponsoring the linky party today and that pretty bridesmaid clutch pictured above...I'm giving that away to one of you!  Just link up your posts and we will draw a random winner from the linky participants.

Happy  Monday!

{mystery sew along - day 3}

Ready to finish up our mystery sew along?  Go back HERE for Day 1 and HERE for Day 2 so you can catch up if you missed the first parts.

OK kids, got your twine handy?

 Cut 3 pieces of your twine about a yard in length (36" or so).  Find the middle of one piece, center it on the bottom of your mystery ball and following one of your seams, tie it in a knot at the top and pull it tight.  Repeat this until you have your twine tied up on each seam.  Leave the excess twine for now - don't trim it.  Now you will see our ball has been "quilted" and has these puffy defined sections.  You can put a few stitches on the bottom to keep the twine in place or even a dot of hot glue if you'd like.

What on earth could this mystery ball be??  Is it starting to come to you now?

Well, we are in the home stretch.  Right click on the pattern below, save it and print it out.  I had to go outside to get some inspiration to sketch this next part.

Yes, you may want to choose a green print for the "leaf" looking pattern.  And the one that "resembles a stem" might look good in brown.  Not that they are a "leaf" and a "stem" but just sayin, that might work out well in those colors.  Take two of the "leaf" pieces, right sides facing, stitch all the way around leaving about an 1 1/2" opening in the base.  Repeat for the other set as well as the "stem".  Turn them all right sides out and fill with your stuffing.  Don't overfill the "leaves" too much.

See the little red arrow up there?  You could hand stitch OR machine stitch some detail on this "object that resembles a leaf" to "resemble some veins"...you know, in case it was in fact, a leaf.

Next, tuck under your opening on the "leaves" and then place on the top of your "ball" and stitch on.  Place that "stem" looking thing in the center of the "leaves" and tuck under your edges and stitch it on.  Next, take your excess twine that was left hanging and tie it in a bow around your stem.

What's that you say?  It looks like a pumpkin?  Awesome!  Cuz' IT IS A PUMPKIN!

A fun patchworky wonky kind of pumpkin!  SURPRISE!!  Were you totally surprised?  Ha!  Was it fun? NOW...guess what, on Monday, for my inspiration link up party, can I ask if you will post your pumpkins?  I would love to see them! That would be awesome!  Let me know what you think of this mystery sew along...maybe we can do more! ...I hope you think it was fun and worth it!)

{mystery sew along - day 2}

Hmm...so what could it possibly be?  The mystery continues!

If you are just joining us, go back here to start from the beginning of our mystery sew along.

I am so happy to be sharing this project with you because it brings back fond family memories.  My Aunt used to do TONS of craft shows when I was a little kid.  LOTS of seasonal items and this is a spin on something she used to make back in the 80's.

Today, we are going to use a paper pattern.  Right click on the pattern down below here, save it and print it out.  You may need to do some adjusting on the size -  your pattern piece should measure roughly 10 1/2" from point to point and roughly 4 1/8" at the center widest point.

For this object we are making which shall remain a mystery for now, you can certainly alter the size of this mystery pattern to make various size mystery objects.  Thought I was gonna say what the mystery object was, didn't you?  Nope, it's still a mystery.

Print out the template.  Lay it out on your 6 panels you created yesterday.  Center the template over the center block and cut out your pattern on each of the 6 panels.

Now, take 2 of the panels and lay them right sides facing.  Pin and with 1/4" seams, sew down one long edge.

Continue to add panels on in the same manner.  You are forming a ball.  Now...don't go blurting out if you think you now know what we are doing.  Keep it a surprise.  Just hold your horses!

When you get to the last panel and you are stitching your "ball" closed, LEAVE AN OPENING about 3" long towards the bottom.  Sew your corner points and come up just a bit from the bottom and leave that opening towards the bottom.

Turn your "ball" right side out and stuff it firmly with your stuffing.  Then slip stitch the opening closed.

Wow.  So we are making a mystery ball?  No.  No we are not making a ball.  Come back tomorrow and you'll soon find out!

{mystery sew along}

I love Halloween.  I love Fall.  I love Halloween and Harvest parties and decorations and games and mysteries!  SO, I thought it would be fun to start the first day of Fall here stateside with a fun sew along mystery.  Each day, I will give you a few of the steps but I'm not going to tell you what we are making.  You'll probably figure it out pretty quick BUT it will be a lot of fun to just go along and see what you end up with.  I promise you will love it!  And use it a lot.  And want to make many.

Ready?  OK, TODAY, we are gathering some supplies.

You will need 18 quantity of 4 1/2" squares.  Use up your quilting cottons and add to it some fun pieces for texture.  I used some wool from an old sweater and also corduroy.  You will need some twine.  And poly fiber stuffing.  And of course, all your usual gear, sewing machine and notions, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Once you have your materials gathered, sew 3 of your squares together in a row using 1/4" seams.  You will sew these together until you have a total of 6 groups of 3 squares each.

Come back tomorrow and see what comes next!

{country living fair 2011}

Ok, so last weekend was the Country Living Fair.  And I kind of gave you the backstory here.  And it was awesome.  Do you love crafts?  Antiques?  Vintage wares?  Cute displays and fun clothes and bags and home decor?  This place is HUGE and oozing of delightfulness!

My sweetie pie girlfriend, Kelly, was there with a booth and promoting her fab new book, Sewing with Oilcloth.  And we cut a LOTTA oilcloth baby.  We barely stepped away from that cutting table...it was fabulous that so many people were excited to make something!

I wish I would have taken some more pictures but um, seriously, this was the view I had most of the fair!  I did sneak over to get my obligatory hugs from Jennifer and saw a few of my other friends too wondering around (including my Loft and Lunch buddy Jill who took most of these photos of me!).

If you haven't been to the Country Living Fair yet, I highly recommend it!  The next one is in Georgia and come April, there will be one in Austin, Texas.  People come from all over the country to these fairs and it certainly is worth it!  I've never been to anything else like it.

Back one post, I wrote about my inspiration link party.  It's still on baby!  I know I sprung it on you all rather fast and you weren't ready but I do have THIS

This Monday, I want to share with you one of my inspirations.  I had the pleasure of spending this last weekend working for a friend of mine, Kelly McCants.  You might better know her as "June" from Modern June or the Oilcloth Addict.  She was hosting a booth at the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio (Oh, I'll tell you more about that later).

Kelly always has a smile on her face.  A cheerful greeting.  Infectious enthusiasm for everything she does.  And she does so many things so well.  Kelly has found her niche in sewing with oilcloth which is the title of her first book just released, Sewing with Oilcloth

Seriously, how adorable is Kelly?!?  In 5 years, she has successfully started her business and built it into a thriving, fun and exciting career path.  Kelly's new book is full of inspiration, 20 different projects, that will have you sewing up some oilcloth and laminated cottons in no time.  Think modern retro table covers, art smocks, aprons, placemats, pet mats, splat mats, pennant banners, pillows...the projects in the book and the products she offers goes on and on.

During the Country Living Fair, Kelly did a demonstration using the laminated cottons and covered one of my dining chairs from my sunroom.  I am a lucky girl!  She used this yummy print and it goes fabulously with all my beachy decor and colors I use in that room.  Those chairs were covered with stains from little people but no more!  Now all I have to do is just wipe them clean...no more worries about spills and stains!

Not only is Kelly an amazing business woman but she also is "teacher" to her 2 children.  Yep, she homeschools her kids as well and somehow, manages to keep her studio running in tip top shape and takes care of Mr. Modern June.  I love her to pieces and I'm so incredibly inspired by all that she does.  It was so much fun and an honor to work with her this weekend and watch her in action, doing what she does best.

Here's the best part, Kelly has a signed copy of her new book and a yard of this oilcloth print to giveaway!  I'll have random.org choose a winner from all of the link-up party entrants and announce the winner next Monday.

So, one more great reason to link up.  {Thanks Kelly!}

Link up!  {p.s.  the registration for the Tie Tote bag will begin soon...not today but soon!  Few technical kinks to still work out.  We will keep you posted!}

{tie-front tote online class coming soon!}

Every time I post about hosting sewing classes locally, I usually get a handful of emails or comments that people wish they were close enough to come join us.  So, we got the idea to put together a "virtual" class so no matter where you are...you can join in!

Our first class is this (up there, that cute red bag!).  It's called, The Tie Tote or Tie - Front Tote...because I haven't actually come up with a more clever name for it as of yet.  It's a bag I have been sewing up for the better part of 8 years now.  I know, right?  Long time.  But I get asked about this bag alot AND it's really easy.

This is a great bag if you are new to sewing and making bags.  It will help you to get your feet wet and build your confidence.  The class will have a private blog area for you to access the 3 separate video classes, loads of text to support what you will see in the video and also a place to chat with me and the others taking the class. (It certainly helps to have a budding film maker in the family - thanks Andrew!  You're awesome!!)

This pattern will also be available in a full color paper version as well next month.  It will be one of the first of the "mini-patterns" that I will be offering at a great price.  So if you don't want to take the class but you want the pattern...hold your horses!  It will be here soon!

Registration for this class will open up next Monday.  That is, if I get all of the technical pieces figured out by then.  Cross your fingers.  I'm not between the ages of 12 and 22 so computer stuff does take me a little longer.

Hope you can join us!

{my favorite garden meal}

This morning, I went for a run, albeit, not a very easy run, in our lower pasture.  Our neighbors horses were down in their adjacent pasture and I scared the bajeebers out of them when I came running through our field.  We talked for a bit.  I tried to coax them over to the fence but they would have nothing to do with me.  Hrumpf! After I ran our pasture perimeter 3 times, I started up the sled hill.  We have a big sled hill that goes from our house yard down to the pasture and I walked that up and down and up and down...just trying to get my heart pumping and calories burning so I can button my jeans which have gotten, um, a little snug lately.

At the top of the sled hill is our garden.  When I named our company, Two Peas in a Pod HOMEGROWN designs - the homegrown referred to not only our two peas but also our garden which we depend on to feed us fabulous goodies.  Our tomatoes are coming on so fast that I found a bunch starting to rot on the vine!  UGH!

So, I picked all that I could and will wash them and freeze most of them for soups and chili and sauces this winter.  You can freeze the tomatoes whole with the skins on and then when you need them, as they defrost, the skins come right off and then you can crush them into whatever dish you need them for.  It's making my mouth water just thinking about it.

My kids all time favorite tomato dish (after just plain ol' slice of tomato and cottage cheese) is bruschetta.  I don't measure anything but do it all to taste.  A BUNCH of tomatoes, grape, cherry or regular tomatoes, about 4 cloves of minced garlic, fresh basil minced, salt, pepper, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Heap that on some crusty french bread.  OHHH, my!  So, so, so, good!

Another tomato favorite of ours is open face cheese tomato sandwiches.  Just like a grilled cheese but open.  Butter your bread for grilling, lay a slice of cheese and then a layer of tomato slices and grill until your bread is toasted and cheese melts.

What is coming out of your garden these days?  What yummy things are you making with them?

{Don't forget to come and see me at the Country Living Fair this Friday and Saturday in Columbus, OH.  I'll be working at the Modern June booth as an honorary "Junie" for the weekend!}

september 12th

A day of rebirth. Renewal.

Hope.

Pride.

I don't think my babies will ever understand the fear and anxiety that came from that day, September 11th, 2001 when they were only 6 months old.  I sobbed that day thinking I had just brought these beautiful baby girls into what was a war zone.  I feared the world they would grow up in would be so drastically uncertain, unkind, and evil.

But instead, on September 12th, there was hope.  There was a fighting spirit that we would overcome.  We would work together.  We would honor.  Work hard.  And never forget.

When I went to bed last night, I was so drained.  I'm sure all of us were feeling that way.  We went to church, we talked about forgiveness, we tried to talk to our 10 year old twins about what happened that day.  I wore my old police badge on the inside of my jacket yesterday next to my heart.  My heart just ached.  Because our world changed so much that day.

When I woke up today, I wanted to honor this life that God has given me.

The RENEWAL that is born each and everyday we awake to a perfect new day.

The HOPE that is before each of us to live up to our potential and honor the gifts that God has given us in our faith, family and friends.

The PRIDE that I feel in my heart, because I live in the United States of America.  I am proud to be an American where I am free and incredibly blessed in this life I've been given.

September 12th.  Today is going to be a great day.

{country living fair}

Remember THIS from last year? It is so much fun!  Arts and crafts, good food, vintage wares, and this year...I'm not going as visitor!  Nope, I'm working at the Country Living Fair this year!

The story goes like this.  Last year, when I was at the fair, I met Kelly McCants of Modern June (oh, she's a doll and her stuff is so very cute!).  Kelly and I had already been "twitter friends" so when I walked up to her at the fair, I was like, "Hi!  I'm Trish Preston, from twitter?".  We squeeled, hugged and chit chatted away.  A few weeks ago, Kelly remembered that I live in Columbus and sent me a note asking me if this year, I'd help her out at her booth...cutting fabric and stuff.

Seriously?

Me?

Cut fabric.

HECK YEAH!  I'm not a girl to ever say no to anything that has to do with fabric and sewing.  No, really.  I won't.

I'd love to help out!  So me and one of my girlfriends are headed down to the Country Living Fair on Friday and Saturday (September 16th and 17th) to hang out, cut fabric and help in Kelly's booth.  (I'll have some of my SPROUTS sewing patterns in her booth too!)

{are you local?  Kelly is also going to be doing a book signing over at Sew to Speak on High Street in Columbus on the 15th?  Right Kelly?}

Are you planning on coming to the Country Living Fair?  You should be!  No joke people!  It's a seriously sweet fun event!  Stop by the Modern June booth and say hello!  Kelly will also be doing a book signing for her new book, Sewing with Oilcloth.

I'm already dreaming about the booth that had the fresh bruschetta.  And Jeni's.  Oh, Jeni's ice cream is there.  And fresh kettle corn.  Have I ever mentioned that probably my favorite thing to do besides sew is to eat?  I love hanging out with friends over a great bowl of salsa and chips.  Or artichoke dip.  Or...Hey!  I haven't eaten yet today!  No wonder I'm babbling about food!

Back to the fair.

Guess who else is gonna be there on Friday doing a book signing for her book?  Jennifer!  Sis Boom designer, Jennifer Paganelli will be over at the Earth Angels booth with her book, Girl's World.  Jennifer and I have not yet met in person but I count her as a friend.  As many of you already know, she is one of the most personable, warm and kind women I've ever...not yet met.  And incredibly talented.  Looking forward to meeting her.

So, I guess that's it then.  Have I convinced you that you NEED to make it out to the Country Living Fair?  If you go, will you PROMISE to stop over at the Modern June booth and say hello to me?  I don't get out much, I'm REALLY, REALLY looking forward to a full two days of GIRL TALK / SHOPPING / EATING.  That made me excited just to type it.  girl talk.  shop.  eat.  Better than...well, let's keep it PG here.  You know what I mean.  (Just don't tell my husband I said that hee hee nervous laugh, just kidding honey!)

See you at the fair!

{car quilt. or quilted car}

"Somebody" in my family is quilting their car. Not making a car quilt.

Or a quilt for the car.

But actually creating a quilt design ON their car.

I'd say EXACTLY who it is (cough! cough! It's a girl! cough!  It may or may not be my sister or cough! sister-in-law, cough! or niece, cough!!) because I'm not sure if she's ok with me blabbing about her car.  I mean, I think I casually said something like, "Hey, can I take a picture.....(under breath) for my blog?".  She said, YES!  So, well...so I'm sharing!  Right?!  I HAD to share this because it is TOO CUTE!!

How is she doing it?  Well, that is all very cool scrapbook paper she is using.  I think she said something about japanese prints?  She's using a punch to cut all her circles and then outdoor strength mod-podge to attach them all.  She's going to do the entire rear bumper of her car.  I think it's awesome!

I SO wish my husband would let me do this to our mini-van!

{old friends. new friends. forever friends.}

My grandparents spent a lot of time encouraging me in art as a kid.  They taught me how to paint and draw.  And my grandmother was a fabulously fun sewer as well, although she never taught me anything about sewing.  I wasn't interested then.  One of their good friends in Roseville (near where we spent our vacation recently) was Leslie and Velma Cope.  Leslie was a fabulous artist.

Growing up, we always had a lot of art in our house.  I still do in my own house.  But we had quite a few pieces that Leslie had made.  He painted a lot of farm scenes that take me immediately back to those days at my grandparents house.  So when we were on our vacation, I wanted to take my girls over to the see the Leslie Cope Gallery and learn more about some of the art we have in our own house and show them some of my past.  When we got there, we were greeted by Leslies stepdaughter who was a joy.  (Leslie passed away 10 years ago).  She remembered my grandparents and went to get her mother, Leslies wife, Velma, who of course remembered my grandparents as they had been good friends and she remembered...me.  I probably last saw her more than 20 years ago.  But she hugged me, and grabbed my face, and told me she sure missed my grandmother.  Which made me cry.  Because I miss her too.

Velma took us upstairs to Leslies studio room which isn't part of the public gallery.  When I walked in I was hit so hard with a feeling a deja vu.  See those windows up there?  All that light?  And the easels?  I remember exactly THIS from when I was a kid because my grandmother would take me over to the Copes and take me up to this room to see what he was working on and give me a lesson or two.

Velma showed us her gardens out back and took us to her private residence.  And talked to us.  And watched the kids dance around.  She asked the girls lots of questions.  She told me stories about my grandmother and their group of girlfriends they hung around.  She told me how happy she was that I stopped by and brought my children to see Leslie's art.  Touching that part of my past that day meant so much to me.  I can't even really put it into words.  It was like having a bit of my grandparents back with me for a moment.  I honestly can only think of one other friend of my grandparents that I know that is still living.  That connection disappearing is painful.

It was probably one of the highlights of the trip for me.  I was really drained afterwards.  Just emotional.  We drove back into town and stopped by a new artist friends studio, Alan Cottrill.

Alan is a sculptor and I had read that he had an open working studio.  We stopped in and had the pleasure of meeting Alan.  He was fabulous to talk to and he really inspired our girls.  He gave them each some clay and told them about the process for what he was working on.  The girls were really impressed with his apprentice.  She was a 4-H'er and the girls thought that was really cool!  I think we hung out with him for over an hour just chatting and looking at all of his work.  It was a great stop on our trip and I know we will be back to visit with Alan when we can.

Old friends.  New friends.  Forever friends.  Life isn't about fancy expensive vacations and filling up our lives with "stuff".  It's about relationships.  And connections.  And moments that are meaningful and touch your heart.  Our vacation was filled with those and for that, I am so thankful.

{Summers last hurrah}

Summers last hurrah.  Before school starts.  And homework.  And the leaves start to change color.  And fall from the trees.  That last little chance to grab onto a bit of summer before it's gone for the year.

As a kid, I loved spending time at my Grandparents house in Roseville, Ohio (near Zanesville).  Running around barefoot and staying up late.  Eating ice cream and playing with her dog.  Visiting around town.  Things I fall back on many times when I need a nice place to let my mind drift off to.

So this summer, we decided to save some money and take a quick trip close to home for vacation.  We stayed at one of our state parks, Dillon State Park, in a cabin for a week.  It was very inexpensive, the cabin was perfect, and we had a fabulous time together.  Which, together, is really all that matters.

We went hiking up hills.  Down hills.  Along the ridgeline above the lake.  The Gardener (aka my husband and the Two Peas Daddy), led us through many, many, many, oh yes, MANY, spider webs.  Wow, are those buggers prolific spinning their silks from tree limb to tree limb across the trails.  I pulled out my iPhone and video taped some of our hike, which had us all laughing.  One, features me, um, screaming, as I walked through a spider web with a spider in it as big as my head (ok, really it was like the size of a crumb but still...) and the other is of our Two Peas singing.  Hand motions and all.  Songs from daycamp that they had learned the week before.  Sprout got a little tired and was carried much of the way.  I mean, her legs ARE kinda short.

We biked the trail at the Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve.  We did 8 miles (and we were all a bit saddle sore the next day).  It's an awesome level trail that takes you past beautiful rock features and along the river bank.  One of the peas needed to stop for a break and as we all stopped, a Bald Eagle that was perched just feet from the trail edge, took off down the river corridor.  We had spooked it but how awesome it was to see it that close up!

We made many stops along the way and the Gardener and I called upon our many collective years working in natural resources and taught the girls all about the rocks and plants and trees and animals we saw along the way.  "Hear that?  That's a Kingfisher!  Look!  There he goes!  He's fishing for food!".  "Oh!  See that down on that rock?  That turtle with a long snout?  That's a soft shell turtle.  He doesn't have a hard shell like the other turtles you've seen.  He's sunning himself".  "This spiny seed pod...can you guess what might be inside?  A BUCKEYE!  Carry one around in your pocket and it will bring you good luck!".

Sprout wasn't exactly thrilled with the bike rides we took.  She really wants to be like the big girls and ride a bike herself but I'm pretty sure she also really enjoyed napping in her buggy behind Daddy's bike.

She got over her bike riding disappointment when we went swimming almost everyday at the lake.  And the girls dug in the sand.   And flew kites.  And made new friends.  And swam.  And did cartwheels.  And played on the playground.  And dug, and dug, and dug (what is it about sand?  They played for hours digging and building!).

They even had a wading pool above the beach area and I think Sprout would have slept here if we let her.  The girl is a fish.  If she could swim across the pool I think she'd be ready to join swim team with her sisters.

And if you are anywhere near Zanesville, Ohio - a quick jump from the highway you will find Tom's Ice Cream Bowl.  I imagine my grandmother must have taken me here a time or two as I was growing up.  This place looks much like it did when it opened more than 50 years ago.  Very much the old fashioned ice cream shop.  The ice cream was delish!  And everyone working there was super nice and made you feel like family!  We may or may not have stopped there one last time before we headed home at the end of our week.  Ok, we HAD to!

I took a book to read while we were there.  Not one page did I read.  I just stared off into the woods and listened to the cicadas.  And played with the kids.  Or sat with the Gardener.  And cooked lots of yummy meals that we ate on the screened in porch.  One thing I think the peas will remember forever is that I bought a lot of snacks and foods I NEVER have at home - and they were told so long as they ate at meal time, they could help themselves to any snack, anytime.  They freaked out!  That was a big treat for them!  Chips and sweet tea and oreos and frozen waffles...I never buy frozen waffles!  (that was really a plot to get them to make their own breakfast while the Gardener and I slept in a little longer.  Worked like a charm).

We visited with one of my grandmothers old friends and drove by their old farm.  It made me cry.  My grandparents have been gone for a very long time and I miss them a lot.  I have a lot of good memories about being a kid and wandering around that big farm house of theirs and running around town to visit with friends.  Many of those experiences and people that we met helped shape who I am today.  And visiting places like that and seeing them again - brings me peace.  And joy.  And makes me feel "at home", that comfortable feeling of being where you belong and appreciating where you have been.

I'll share more about that later.  More about our visit with old friends...for now, I have a lot A LOT of work to do.  SO MANY NEW PATTERNS...so NOT done yet.  SO close...so very close!

{ah, vacation}

Hiking.  Biking.  Swimming.  Sand castle building.  Ice cream eating.  Bird watching.  Kite flying.  Visiting very old friends.  Playing in clay and sculpting.  Vacation was good.  Gonna have to do the required purge and make you all endure a few posts about our trip we took last week with our family.  Just giving fair warning - no sewing posts this week.  Just family stuff.  You ok with that?
